The signal

Westport Fuel Systems has rebranded as Aetherion Technologies and is narrowing its strategic focus to compressed natural gas (CNG) systems for North American long-haul trucking. The company divested its light-duty business to Heliaca Investments in July 2025 for $79.5 million, enabling a strategic reset around its core HPDI (high-pressure direct injection) technology.

The move signals confidence in CNG adoption among large fleets seeking price stability and operational cost predictability, particularly as diesel volatility creates supply chain planning challenges. Aetherion's joint venture with Volvo Group, Cespira, demonstrated a CNG-capable truck at ACT Expo in May 2026 achieving over 600 miles of range, with 12,000 HPDI-equipped trucks already operational globally.

The company projects significant near-term growth as EPA certification clears the final regulatory hurdle for North American commercialization. For supply chain professionals managing large fleet operations, this development presents a viable alternative to diesel with infrastructure already in place through existing natural gas pipelines.
