The signal
Conrail has appointed John Wright, a seasoned freight rail executive, as its new president and chief operating officer, replacing the recently retired Brian Gorton. Wright joins from Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad where he served as general manager, bringing extensive experience from leadership roles at Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation across locomotive operations and regional divisions.
This leadership transition occurs at a critical juncture for the jointly owned carrier, which manages approximately 920 employees and operates 1,200 track-miles across the Northeast and Detroit regions. Wright has articulated three core priorities: improving operational performance, strengthening regional infrastructure, and maintaining customer service levels.
Given Conrail's unique position as a co-owned switching carrier serving major supply chain corridors, operational excellence and infrastructure investment will be essential for supporting customer growth across the densely populated Northeast markets.
