The signal

EU road freight transport demonstrated modest growth in 2024, expanding 0.6% year-on-year to 1,869 billion tonne-kilometres from 1,857 billion in 2023. Poland emerged as the dominant market, commanding nearly 20% of EU traffic with 368 billion tonne-kilometres, followed by Germany (281 billion) and Spain (272 billion).

The top five countries account for two-thirds of all EU road freight, indicating concentrated logistics infrastructure and capacity. Product categories remained stable compared to 2023, with food, beverages, and tobacco maintaining their top position at 312 billion tonne-kilometres, followed by mixed goods and agricultural products.

This stability suggests that underlying supply chain demand remains consistent across essential sectors including food distribution, construction materials, and chemicals. For supply chain professionals, the data reveals a maturing but still-growing market with geographic concentration risks and steady demand across core logistics categories.
