Norfolk Southern Converts 33 Locomotives to AC Power

Norfolk Southern and Wabtec Corp. have initiated a modernization program to convert 33 older ES44DC locomotives into advanced ES44ACM units equipped with AC-traction technology. This strategic investment represents a continuation of their long-standing partnership, which has already encompassed over 1,000 DC-to-AC conversions since 2015. The upgrade program will extend through 2027, with work performed at Wabtec facilities in Fort Worth, Texas, and Erie, Pennsylvania.

The conversion delivers substantial operational benefits without requiring capital expenditure on entirely new rolling stock. AC-traction locomotives provide superior low-speed pulling power, improved adhesion, enhanced reliability, and better lifecycle economics compared to their DC counterparts. Beyond the propulsion system upgrade, the project incorporates advanced digital technology including enhanced diagnostic capabilities and predictive maintenance planning, which will reduce lifecycle maintenance requirements and improve overall fleet performance.
