The signal
Verity, On, and Maersk have successfully completed a three-month pilot project demonstrating the viability of RFID-enabled autonomous drones for warehouse inventory management. The collaboration tested the technology at a Maersk facility in California, executing over 1,500 flights and capturing more than 80 million RFID reads across approximately 1.25 million individual tags with a 99.9% accuracy rate. The integration extends Verity's existing AI-driven vision-based system by adding the capability to track inventory beyond line of sight, including inside boxes.
The drone system can read up to 1,000 tags per second while autonomously navigating warehouse aisles, enabling precise localization and identification of items throughout the warehouse lifecycle. This advancement addresses a critical limitation in current inventory management systems and has significant implications for large-scale, high-volume warehousing operations. The pilot demonstrates that automation technology can augment human capabilities rather than replace them, allowing warehouse teams to focus on strategic tasks while the system handles routine inventory counts.
For supply chain professionals, this represents a meaningful step toward achieving real-time inventory visibility in complex warehouse environments, with potential applications across multiple industries and regions.
