The signal
CSX Corporation has eliminated 109 operations management positions as part of a broader restructuring of its engineering functions, representing the latest round of workforce adjustments at the major U.S. railroad. This follows an earlier round in January where the company laid off approximately 5% of its non-union management workforce (166 employees). The elimination reflects CSX's strategy to create a leaner operating structure that better aligns field support with operational needs while maintaining safety and service capability.
Of the affected employees, 58 were offered new roles within operations while 51 received severance packages. Notably, 75% of those accepting severance have union seniority and may return to craft positions, providing some employee flexibility during the transition. The restructuring comes as CSX Chief Operating Officer Mike Cory announces his retirement, with his responsibilities being redistributed among existing executives.
Despite workforce reductions, CSX reported strong third-quarter earnings expectations with revenue projected up 10.3% year-over-year, suggesting the company is pursuing efficiency gains rather than responding to demand weakness.
