The signal
Old Dominion Freight Line has secured the top national less-than-truckload carrier ranking for the 17th consecutive year, according to the annual Mastio & Co. survey, which evaluates customer value and loyalty across 155 carriers. The survey, based on 1,647 telephone interviews with shippers between June and September, assessed performance across 28 key metrics including on-time delivery, pricing, technology, and back-end operations. Old Dominion ranked first in 24 service categories, emphasizing trustworthiness and ease of doing business.
Daylight Transport, a mid-sized inter-regional carrier, claimed top overall honors for the third consecutive year, signaling that customer preferences extend beyond pure national scale. XPO posted the largest year-over-year improvement among national operators, while Estes maintained its position as the best value provider for the fifth straight year. Regional leaders remained consistent, with Pitt Ohio, Dayton Freight Lines, and Peninsula retaining their respective market positions.
This year's results reflect a maturing LTL market where service quality, pricing transparency, and technology capabilities increasingly drive shipper loyalty and carrier selection decisions. Supply chain professionals should monitor these rankings as they validate investment strategies in service quality and digital tools while highlighting emerging competitive threats.
